Divorce can shatter the foundation of our lives and leave us emotionally and financially in a very shaky place.
This doesn’t mean that this is a place we are meant to stay. The Divorce Uber has not driven us to a destination from which we can never leave. At anytime we can call another Uber to take us somewhere else. If we can’t afford an Uber we can grab our purse and set out on foot. We might not yet know where we are going and wander for a bit, but unless we get out of the house, smell the lilacs on the bush outside our front door, and peek around the corner, we will remain where we are.
I read that after her divorce, J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books (which I’ve finally started reading), found herself living in a cramped apartment with her daughter, jobless and penniless. During a Harvard University commencement speech, she is quoted as saying: ”An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless.”
We don’t need to write best selling books to reclaim our lives. All we need to do is write on the pages of our own life, which is even better because grammar and spelling won’t matter!
What matters is how we fill those pages. Many chapters of our lives have already been written. Some we’d like to rewrite. Some we’d like to rip to shreds and start again. Others are filled with beautiful memories reminding us of joy and adventure and hope.
There is another Uber always at our disposal. It is the Uber of Imagination, and it is free for anyone who calls for it. Where will it take us next? A better question, where will we allow it to take us next? Though we can’t control the traffic, the roadblocks or potholes, with imagination we will find our way.
