I’m sure you’ve noticed that on one March day the temperature can be in the fifties, the glorious sun will be shining, and we can’t wait to get outside for a walk. Then the next day dawns with temperatures in the twenties and snow flakes falling from gray skies, and we want to pull the covers over our heads and stay in bed all day.
Just like the weather and without any warning, we can shift from feeling pretty darn good about ourselves to being certain we are pond scum! And though we can’t control the weather, we can minimize this exhausting “Tarzan-style swing.
Simple reminders for feeling “pretty darn good about yourself…I especially like #10.
- Honor all your emotions, events dark, gloomy ones. If you don’t they will find another way to get you attention. And all our emotions have something valuable to teach us.
- Take a few minutes to breath deeply. Your breath calms you and brings you back to yourself.
- Slow down. Take time for yourself on a regular basis and don’t wait until the melt-down has started!
- Consider saying NO to something you think you “have to” do. When you do what is good for you, it ends up being good for those around you ( totally backwards from what I was taught!)
- Read something inspiring.
- Start a gratitude journal
- Connect with nature.
- Exercise…even just a little!
- Connect with a friend who will listen and not try to fix anything.
- Remember that, according to author and artist, SARK, sometimes the best use of self-help books are to stack them up and put a bowl of ice cream on top!
Soon there will be more days of sun and less of gray skies. And when life swirls around you, like a Minnesota Spring Blizzard, you will have a compass, a North Star at your core, that will always guide you.
