I couldn’t sleep all night and woke up in the morning feeling like I was pond scum and should just go eat worms….all because I made a mistake.
The more I thought about the mistake, the bigger it became, the more damage I was certain it would cause, and before I knew it I was filled with shame and fear.
I had no doubt that my life was going to fall apart and everyone was going to desert me. And as they walked away they would be shaking their heads mumbling, “What was she thinking?”
Talk about paying attention to where you put your energy! I had not quite lost my mind…just lost control of it for a while.
Then I remembered I could choose where to put my thoughts and my energy, and I made two decisions.
First, I asked that my mistake resolve itself in my highest good and the highest good for everyone. May sound corny, but it worked!
Next, I found something positive and hopeful to think about, which was a bit of a challenge considering the gloom I had created for myself. And once more, corny as it sounds, it worked!
Mistakes are human. We are SUPPOSED to make them, but along the way we have come to believe they are not acceptable. Mistakes teach us humility, compassion, and patience. They give us the opportunity to practice forgiving ourselves…which is sometimes more difficult than forgiving others.
Watching how our mind works and choosing another way to think, we can close our eyes at the end of the day and look forward to sweet dreams.
