SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW Dr. Kate — “the angel in snowshoes” — was one of Wisconsin’s first female doctors.
She would go ANY
where in ANY weather to help someone in need.
Dr. Kate delivered more than 3,000 babies and never lost a single mother. But she dreamed of doing even more…
One day, Kate saved the life of Josephine Rubloff. The Rubloffs were the wealthiest family in Woodruff, Wisconsin and asked what they could do for her. Kate told them about her dream of building a hospital. They donated $1,000. Soon, the whole town started chipping in.
Local high school students started the Million Penny Parade and raised thousands of dollars. Kate even appeared on the popular TV show “This Is Your Life.” Money started pouring in from across the country!
Finally, in 1954, Lakeland Memorial Hospital opened its doors.
Dr. Kate died just two years later, but you can visit the museum dedicated to her in Woodruff — near the original site of the hospital she helped build.
